Watering Wisdom: How (and When) to Water in Summer Heat

Fran’s Flowers Blog

When the summer sun is blazing and your garden is bursting with life, watering becomes one of the most important—and tricky—tasks. Too little, and your plants wilt in protest. Too much, and you risk drowning roots or inviting disease. So how do you strike the right balance? At Fran’s Flowers, we’re here to take the guesswork out of watering with a few tried-and-true tips to help your plants thrive, even during a heatwave.

🌞 Timing Is Everything

The best time to water in summer is early in the morning—before 9 a.m. if you can. Why? The temperatures are cooler, which means less water evaporates and more soaks down to the roots where it’s needed most. Evening watering is your second-best option, especially if mornings aren’t convenient—but be careful not to soak foliage too late in the evening, which can invite mildew and fungus.

🌿 Know Your Plants’ Needs

Different plants have different watering needs:

  • Containers & hanging baskets often dry out daily in summer heat—check them every morning.

  • New plantings (within the first month or two) need consistent moisture to establish roots.

  • Established perennials, shrubs, and trees typically need a deep soak once or twice a week, not a daily sprinkle.

💧 Deep Watering = Happy Roots

Rather than watering lightly every day, aim for less frequent but deeper watering. This encourages plants to grow deeper root systems, which helps them withstand heat and drought better. Shallow watering just keeps roots near the surface—right where the soil dries out fastest.

👆 Use the Finger Test

Stick your finger about two inches into the soil. If it’s dry at that depth, it’s time to water. This quick test is more reliable than guessing based on appearance, especially for container plants and raised beds.

🌻 Mulch Is a Summer MVP

We love mulch, and your plants will too! A 2–3” layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. It’s one of the easiest ways to reduce how often you need to water.

🚫 Avoid the #1 Summer Mistake: Overwatering

Yes, even in the heat, overwatering can be a problem. Signs include yellowing leaves, soggy soil, and a general “limp” look. Don’t water again until the top couple inches of soil feel dry. Trust your plants—they’ll let you know what they need!

Summer watering doesn’t have to be a guessing game. With a little attention and the right strategy, you’ll keep your plants happy and hydrated all season long. If you’re not sure what’s best for your garden, come visit us at Fran’s Flowers—we’re always happy to help you grow with confidence!
