Your June Garden Checklist

What to Plant, Prune, and Plan
From your friends at Fran’s Flowers

June is a bustling month in the garden—and we love every minute of it at Fran’s Flowers! Whether you’re just getting started or already deep in the dirt, there’s always something to plant, prune, or plan this time of year. To help you stay organized and inspired, we’ve put together a practical June garden checklist for gardeners of all levels.

What to Plant

Annuals:
Still time to pack in the color! Fill containers and beds with heat-loving annuals like petunias, verbena, lantana, and sun coleus. At Fran’s Flowers, our benches are bursting with vibrant options perfect for full sun or part shade.

Perennials:
June is a great time to add perennials like coneflowers, rudbeckia, coreopsis, and salvia. The soil is warm, and there’s still plenty of growing season left for roots to get established.

Shrubs:
Yes, you can plant shrubs now! Just be sure to water them deeply and regularly through dry spells. Look for summer stunners like butterfly bush or hydrangeas—we have fresh stock arriving weekly at Fran’s Flowers.

Veggies & Herbs:
Still time to plant tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, basil, parsley, and more! Succession sow crops like beans, carrots, and salad greens to keep the harvest coming.

✂️ What to Prune

  • Spring-blooming shrubs (like lilacs and forsythia) can be pruned now that their flowers have faded.

  • Pinch back annuals to encourage fuller growth and more blooms.

  • Deadhead spent flowers from perennials like salvia and geraniums to keep them blooming longer.

  • Stake tall perennials like delphiniums or foxglove before they flop.

Need help identifying what to prune and when? The team at Fran’s Flowers is always happy to answer questions or walk you through it.

🐛 Pest Control & Plant Health

  • Check under leaves for aphids, caterpillars, and beetles. Early detection makes control easier.

  • Look out for powdery mildew on squash and zinnias—space plants well and water at the base.

  • Use organic solutions when possible—neem oil, insecticidal soap, and handpicking go a long way.

  • Watch for deer and rabbits—June is snack season for garden visitors. We carry repellents and deterrents to help.

🌿 Fertilizing & Feeding

  • Annuals and containers need regular feeding—use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks.

  • Veggies and roses benefit from slow-release or organic fertilizers mid-month.

  • Lawn care: If you didn’t fertilize in May, early June is your window!

🌱 Plan Ahead

  • Map your garden’s successes and misses so far—what’s thriving, what’s struggling?

  • Start thinking about fall bloomers—mums, asters, ornamental grasses.

  • Take photos of your beds now for planning next year’s layout or rotating crops.

  • Visit Fran’s Flowers often! Our inventory evolves weekly, and our staff is always ready to share fresh ideas and helpful advice.

At Fran’s Flowers, we know that June is when the magic happens—when gardens come alive and grow in leaps and bounds. Use this checklist as your guide, and don’t hesitate to reach out or stop by if you need help choosing plants, tackling pests, or planning what’s next.

Here’s to a beautiful, blooming June! 🌸
